Leadership Lesson: Romance vs. Reality

One of the toughest balancing acts in ministry is dreaming big WHILE you slug it out in the trenches. In other words, there's a romantic side of ministry and then, there's reality.

I love to 'romance' ministry. To think about the ways that God could show up, to think about the hundreds and thousands of lives that could be touched this year, to dream about a ministry where nothing goes wrong and everything goes right...

I also know, all too well, that ministry never goes completely according to plan. Reality is often a hard wake-up call. People burn out, bail out, or just become plain bummed out. Balls are dropped. Blizzards show up and upend an event. People backslide and backstab. In short, ministry hurts.

As leaders we have to function in both worlds. We must dream big (romance) and we must be persevere through difficult times (reality).
